One of the most common reasons people avoid getting necessary dental work done is the fear of discomfort. At Hansford Smile, we know that you’d rather drift off to sleep and wake up with all of your dentistry done in one appointment. That’s why we offer both oral and IV sedation. Dr. Hansford is one of the only specially trained dentists in the area qualified to provide both oral and IV sedation. He’s sedated over 4000 people and they tell us they love it!
Questions commonly asked about sedation dentistry are:
Am I a candidate for sedation?
If you are a generally healthy adult, you are a likely candidate for sedation. If sedation is of interest to you, let us know and we can tell you if you are eligible.
Is it safe?
Yes. To ensure your safety we use monitoring equipment to watch your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels. All of our team is specially trained and certified in sedation dentistry procedures.
Is sedation only for ‘chickens’?
No. Sedation is often chosen by people who prefer to get all of their dentistry done in one appointment with comfort, or who simply prefer not to be fully aware of the dental procedures they are receiving. If you have any of the following, you are a candidate for sedation: fear or anxiety about dental treatment, history of dental trauma, difficulty getting numb, sensitive gag reflex, limited time to get your dentistry completed, embarrassment about your teeth, have not been to a dentist in many years or even decades, or simply prefer to sleep through your appointment.
I’m afraid that if I ask for sedation the doctor will say no.
Many people come to Dr. Hansford specifically because we offer sedation and they wouldn’t get any dentistry done without it. All of the procedures we offer including general dentistry, dental hygiene, wisdom tooth extractions, cosmetic and implant dentistry are available with sedation.
What special arrangements do I need to make to be sedated?
Before your appointment you will need to follow specific instructions for eating and drinking and have a designated driver drop you off. During the appointment you should wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves and we will take care of you and treat you well. After the appointment your designated driver will accompany you home, where you should plan to relax for the remainder of the day. You can eat and drink what is comfortable for you after the appointment.
